Sketches in the Ruins of My Mind

What's it all about?

Random writings on stuff that takes my fancy - mostly by me, sometimes by others. It's amusing for me to look back from time-to-time to see vignettes of what was exercising my mind way back when. The past is another country and I won't be back there again.

We live in a magical reality, not a real world, in a collective hallucination that fits our human cognitive processes and enables us to relate to each other as humans. That's not to say there isn't a real world; but though we may see reality we see through a glass, darkly. The human mind is adapted for survival and not for truth.

Politicians, religious leaders, the media - effective opinion formers of all stripes - understand this perfectly. This is a widely quoted passage from a rare moment of candour from a senior White House official apropos the Iraq situation:

"We're an empire now and when we act we create our own reality and while you're studying that reality we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
- As told to New York Times Magazine writer Ron Suskind

Caveat lector. Reality transforms faster than the speed of thought on the Conspiracy Planet.

A must see page for all true skeptics of the modern intellectual scene is Alan Sokal's "Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity." Required reading to understand modern political philosophy.

Or how about more quantum physics in a (supposedly) different context.
